Cassava is one of the most reliable arable/cash crop for the common man. I know this by an experience of more than 20 years in cassava farming and processing.
There is hardly a family in Nigeria that is not at least dependent on cassava-based meals like gari, fufu, lafun/amala, (cassava pudding from cassava flour), abacha, starch, and bread for up to 45% food consumption. What about industrial consumer products like starch, ethanol and cassava syrup. Cassava is also a good feed product for pigs.
The International Institute for Tropical Agriculture made an official submission that an estimated 500,000,000 people constituting about half of the total population of residents, depend on cassava in Africa, let alone other parts of the world.
